Mandala Series

As a result of having a background in art, social work and teaching, my artwork inherently reflects, reveals and embodies many of the juxtaposed tensions and forces that are present in our everyday lives. How do we balance, organize and utilize all of this energy? By exploring the basic Mandala form I am attempting to represent a spactial manifestation of not only our inner and outer worlds, but our spiritual and material ones as well. Whether the viewer chooses to draw upon the paintings for healing, meditative or simply decorative purposes, I hope that by viewing and engaging with the Mandalas people will be inspired to think more closely about the balance and spiritually in their own lives.

Mandala is Sanskrit for circle. It represents a snapshot of time in the universe from beginning to end. A Mandala suggests unity, completion, and wholeness. Being centered within one's self. As with all Mandala work the paintings are circular in design and manifest three basic properties; center, symmetry, and the cardinal points of north, south, east, and west. In addition, each Mandala contains "energy" depicted by the gold threads of lines which radiate in and out of the center point. These "energy lines", in various forms and colors, have been a consistent element in my artwork since I began painting.

All of the Mandalas in the ongoing series of paintings are 24 x 24. They are made on a canvas covered wood surface. The varied processes of acrylic painting are combined with encaustic techniques, mixed media and found objects.
